Requirements

  • Must meet the Company's "General Requirements"; and, in addition:
  • Successfully completed the Meter Technician's portion of the pre-employment test, except that an employee hired prior to May 1, 1983 who has or obtains a high school diploma or its equivalent, preferably having taken courses in physics and mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, does not have to complete the pre-employment test.
  • Able to follow instructions and perform routine operations.
  • Have mechanical aptitude.
  • Neat, clean and orderly in work and person and be able to meet the public in a pleasant and tactful manner.
  • Possess keen faculty of observation and a temperament suited to a fixed routine.
  • Have the ability to learn: The reading of wiring diagrams and the making of simple field sketches. The practices involved in the operation and maintenance of meters and associated equipment. The identification and use of all materials, tools and equipment commonly used in the work.
  • Have the ability to complete satisfactorily the Company courses in Fundamentals of Electricity-Direct Current and Alternating Current.
  • Qualify for an auto driver's license to operate motor vehicles in the State of New Jersey.
  • Able to acquire an extensive knowledge of the application, operation and maintenance of electric meters and electric service equipment, and of the various types of electric service furnished by the Company.
  • Able to acquire the ability to diagnose and correct the usual operating difficulties with electric meters, electric service installations and electronic circuits and components of metering, meter testing and other electronic equipment associated with Meter Department work.
  • Some positions at PSEG require access to information covered by the Department of Energy’s regulation 10 CFR 810 (Part 810). Responsibilities

  • As the employee becomes qualified through acquired experience and training performs all duties in the shop and in the field associated with all types of meters and associated metering equipment and metering communications equipment.
  • This includes installation, maintenance, programming and troubleshooting of these meters, associated metering equipment and metering communications equipment.
  • These duties also include the layout and inspections of all service installations.
  • Investigates the outside plant work necessary to make connections to these installations.
  • In addition the duties include all work associated with testing, maintaining and modifying electronic equipment associated with Meter Department work.
  • Must be able to acquire a thorough working knowledge of all sections of the Meter Department Manual and of the safety rules and practices.
  • Must be able to acquire a thorough working knowledge of electrical testing procedure.
  • Able to acquire a working knowledge of: The provisions of the National Electrical Code pertaining to this work. The Public Service requirements and local municipal regulations covering the installation of electric service. The overhead and underground distribution system, the geography of the area in which he/she works and knowledge of those sections of the various Company handbooks and manuals which pertain to this work.
