About The Position

Under limited supervision, read residential, commercial, industrial gas and water meters using handheld and mobile collection devices. Additionally, this position is responsible for reporting abnormal and unusual conditions observed while completing the route. This position walks eight to ten miles daily in all weather conditions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Minimum of 6 months of current experience reading utility meters visually and using a handheld device with proven timeliness and accuracy.
  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Pre-employment and/or post-offer physical demands screening.
  • Covered under the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol testing provisions.
  • Covered under the Department of Transportation Operator Qualification (OQ) Rule.

Responsibilities

  • Read gas and water meters manually in addition to electronic devices.
  • Read meters and record data accurately into a handheld device and obtain Encoder Transmitter Receiver (ERT) readings via a mobile device while walking and driving a variety of route lengths and terrains.
  • Communicate with customers in a diplomatic manner in order to gain access to meters located inside residential, commercial or industrial buildings.
  • Identify and write up meters that are malfunctioning or in need of attention.
  • Detect natural gas odorant through smell and/or gas leak detector.
  • Walk and/or drive an entire route safely and efficiently.
  • Enter residences and businesses containing animals to perform meter reading duties.
  • Remove and replace manhole covers of 25 - 100 lbs. and use a meter pole to read meters located inside manholes.
  • Traverse various terrains in all weather conditions to access meters.
  • Observe and report all abnormal and unusual conditions including pinion leaks, broken meter glass, water leaks, broken meter covers, manholes caving in, ERT problems, protruding stop boxes, and any other dangerous conditions.
  • Immediately report all gas and carbon monoxide leaks detected and follow District and Division procedures for customer safety.
  • Complete meter reading routes in the scheduled time for billing.
  • Survey gas meters and piping for leaks and corrosion using a leak device.
  • Report suspected unauthorized use of gas and/or water.
  • Professionally respond to rate payer inquiries while building and maintaining good customer relations.
  • Provide reasonable care and use of District equipment and vehicles, adhere to the Safety Manual and established safety standards.
