Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology/Atmospheric Science (or closely related field).
  • Must be a true morning person with no issue reporting to work by 3:00 a.m. consistently.
  • Proven on-air forecasting experience (morning show experience a plus) with a strong 'First Alert' weather mindset.
  • Embraces and champions the 'First Alert' weather brand, delivering urgent, trustworthy coverage when it matters most.
  • Ability to clearly explain impacts and timing of local weather.
  • Proficiency with weather systems/tools (WSI/The Weather Company), radar interpretation, and forecast models.
  • Strong live-TV skills: calm under pressure, decisive during breaking weather, and able to ad-lib smoothly.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills—able to make complex weather easy and engaging for viewers.
  • Digital-first strength: comfortable creating content for streaming, web, apps, and social, including short-form video.
  • Team-oriented, dependable, and able to thrive during extended severe weather coverage.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to travel as coverage demands.
  • Has strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Bring a positive attitude! We strongly prefer candidates who lead with optimism and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver accurate, energetic weathercasts for morning newscasts, aligned with the 'First Alert' weather brand.
  • Monitor local weather conditions and issue 'First Alert' coverage quickly for severe or changing weather.
  • Build and update hourly, daypart, and extended forecasts with clear, viewer-friendly explanations.
  • Create compelling weather graphics and utilize data (radar, satellite, models) to support 'First Alert' decisions.
  • Help lead WHSV’s 2026 streaming growth goals, delivering 'First Alert' weather updates and on-camera content designed for streaming audiences and new digital-first formats.
  • Communicate breaking weather across platforms (TV, web, app, social) with consistent 'First Alert' messaging.
  • Coordinate with newsroom leadership so weather coverage drives show structure during impactful weather.
  • Provide live reports and extended coverage during severe weather and major events as needed.
  • Engage the community through school visits, station events, and digital interaction to strengthen trust in our 'First Alert' weather brand.
  • Maintain readiness and documentation for severe weather procedures, ensuring the team’s 'First Alert' response is reliable and timely.
