About The Position

This assignment is an interim role for the remainder of the 2025-2026 school year. The METCO High School Academic Coordinator reports directly to the METCO Director. Because of the nature of the METCO Program, the position requires a person who is sensitive to and experienced in meeting the needs of students of color and their families, and who is able to help and guide students on their journey through a school integration program. The METCO High School Academic Coordinator must be able to work cooperatively with principals, teachers and other school personnel. The two priority objectives of this position are: To collaborate with the WHS faculty/staff to provide academic and social-emotional support to Boston-resident students. To identify and support the needs of Boston-resident students as it relates to racial-identity development and navigating the benefits and challenges of school integration, in a predominantly white institution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • DESE licensure is required.
  • Knowledge of applicable School Committee policies and procedures.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, students, parents, teachers & support staff.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Ability to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to operate general office equipment, word processing equipment, and computers as required to accomplish the work assigned.
  • Ability to travel to Boston for METCO meetings.

Nice To Haves

  • Licensure as a School Psychologist, School Counselor, or School Social Worker/Adjustment counselor is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and small-group instruction and/or support in accordance with students' needs in order to facilitate high academic achievement.
  • Observe METCO students in class to gather data relating to social development, parent/teacher conferences, and general academic progress.
  • Provide individual and group activities which afford a structure and atmosphere for the communication and resolution of concerns (i.e. student, teacher, or parent generated topics).
  • Collaborate with teachers and school counselors by attending regular team meetings for updates of student progress.
  • Attend all IEP/504 meetings for Boston students.
  • Lead book groups, lunch groups for students as a means of building social-emotional capacity, and checking in with students.
  • Establish and maintain regular contact with METCO families.
  • Contribute pertinent information, as requested, to the Program’s newsletter s.
