About The Position

We are seeking an experienced Metallurgist to lead laboratory operations and contribute to our headquarters team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in material science, metallurgy, and tungsten carbide processes, with expertise in quality management and cross-functional collaboration. This role can be based in either Pittsburgh, PA, or Beckley, WV, with travel between the two locations 50% of the time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Material Science, Metallurgy, or a related engineering field (required).
  • Minimum of 10 years in material science or metallurgy.
  • Hands-on experience in tungsten cobalt powder formulation, pressing, and sintering.
  • Experience with HIP sintering (a plus).
  • Knowledge of wear tool design and carbide brazing processes.
  • Familiarity with cutting tools and applications (a plus).
  • Excellent communication skills (listening, verbal, written) with the ability to collaborate across teams and create clear documentation.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving capabilities with a proactive and unbiased approach.
  • Effective in setting goals, measuring results, and adapting to changing situations and job demands.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with good organizational skills.
  • Leadership skills to guide interdepartmental teams and provide training to achieve quality standards.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and applicable quality management system software.
  • Technical skills in math, data analysis, and interpreting instructions in various formats.
  • A positive, self-directed, team-oriented mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Support and enhance the company's quality management system using ISO processes and ASTM specifications.
  • Coordinate Quality department resources to assist plant operations.
  • Advise Operations on plant/manufacturing changes, product quality, and machinery capability.
  • Collaborate with Purchasing on raw materials, non-conforming materials, and new product quality requirements.
  • Partner with Sales to provide technical assistance, customer support, and bid information.
  • Address customer quality issues, provide follow-ups, and visit customer sites for evaluations and testing.
  • Create precise component designs and advise on metal suitability.
  • Perform testing using both destructive and non-destructive techniques.
  • Lead continual improvement projects and documentation efforts.
  • Conduct Root Cause Corrective Actions for process deviations or quality failures.
