About The Position

This position is responsible for preparing and analyzing samples in the Metallographic lab.

  • Incumbent must sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Incumbent will be required to use a computer with keyboard, telephone or handheld mobile device for extended periods of time, and office machinery as needed.
  • Incumbent may occasionally be required to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Incumbent must be able to read, see, hear, and speak English.
  • Incumbent must be able to use tools including hand grinding equipment, band saw, hydraulic saw, polishing cloth, microscope, sand paper, and files.
  • Position requires incumbent to wear personal protective equipment including gloves, safety glasses, and occasionally respirators. Steel-toed boots are preferred.
  • Shifts may vary.
  • Incumbent may need to work outside core operating hours as requested.
  • High school diploma or equivalency required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook.
  • Proficient with software required to complete metallographic testing, including imaging and analysis software.

Nice To Haves

  • Some college level materials-related coursework or prior training/experience regarding material and metallographic preparation/analysis preferred.
  • Experience or exposure to a lab environment, microscopes, chemicals or other natural sciences is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare samples for testing by cutting to appropriate specifications, mounting, grinding, and/or chemical etching the sample.
  • Analyze microstructural/macrostructural features of the material using materials analysis techniques and imaging/analysis software per applicable specifications and purchase order requirements.
  • Determine conformance of the material to specified requirements, or report observed results when requested for research and development purposes only. Prepare reports accordingly for review.
  • Communicate nonconformances and any issues with testing or delays to customer.
  • Participate in internal peer review of all test reports.
  • Utilize related materials analysis and imaging software.
  • Perform micro indentation hardness testing and lab-scale heat treatment to support analysis.
  • Communicate with customers, as needed, regarding nonconformances, scope of work issues/questions or unexpected analytical results.
  • Make purchasing recommendations to Metallographic Lab Manager.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
