About The Position

The Metallurgical Technician position at Scot Forge involves performing mechanical and metallurgical tests on products to ensure they meet required specifications. The role is critical in supporting the manufacturing of custom forged solutions for various industries, including energy, transportation, and national defense. The technician will actively participate in safety discussions, conduct tests, analyze results, and document findings, contributing to the overall quality and safety of the production process.

Requirements

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to work safely with caustic and acidic chemicals.
  • Proficiency in basic math.
  • Experience in safely operating in a laboratory environment using caustic and acidic chemicals.
  • Experience in preparation of metallographic specimens for examination using appropriate mounting materials and etchants for the alloy.
  • Ability to identify and quantify metallographic microstructures of several alloy systems.
  • Experience operating metallographic microscopes, photographic equipment, computer image analysis, mechanical testing equipment, and archiving software.
  • Experience operating Rockwell hardness and microhardness testing machines, macroscope and macro-photographic equipment, and Optical Emission Spectrometer.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in daily safety discussions to promote safer work behaviors and conditions.
  • Review testing requirements of each shop order with respect to customer and specification requirements set by Process Engineering.
  • Communicate with Process Engineering to resolve non-conforming requirements.
  • Prepare samples for inspection under microscope or macroscope using specialized equipment following standard testing procedures.
  • Operate metallographic microscopes and computer image analyzers.
  • Set up, conduct, and evaluate metallurgical tests including metallography, optical emission spectroscopy, and macro & micro hardness tests.
  • Determine acceptability of test outcomes relative to the requirements.
  • Document and input test results, including details for failed materials.
  • Analyze test outcomes for failed materials and recommend corrective action.
  • Calibrate test equipment in accordance with standard procedures.
  • Perform duties of Mechanical Test Technician as needed.
