The Metallography Technician position involves hands-on work that includes the preparation of samples for metallographic examination and mechanical properties testing. This includes activities such as sawing, mounting, grinding, and polishing samples of various materials (both radiological and non-radiological) for follow-on microstructural evaluation using various tools such as optical microscopes and other analytical instruments. The technician will also use various chemicals for cleaning and etching samples prior to microscopy. Additionally, samples will be evaluated for mechanical properties using hardness testers, tensile testing, and other thermo-mechanical and thermo-physical instruments. Other responsibilities include taking inventory of materials (metals, chemicals, equipment, etc.), handling and packaging of wastes (radiological and non-radiological), and maintaining cleanliness in work areas.
