About The Position

As an MEP Designer Intern at Z Modular (a division of Zekelman Industries), you will contribute to the design and engineering of modular construction projects that are reshaping the way communities are built. You’ll gain exposure to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems in modular environments, working alongside engineers and designers to prepare drawings, ensure compliance, and support projects from concept through fabrication. You will report to the Electrical Designer and gain technical knowledge in modular design, factory construction, and site integration. This is a full-time, on-site internship located at our Troy, MI facility. The official Zekelman internship program runs from May 26, 2026, through August 14, 2026. This role is perfect for someone pursuing an engineering degree who is eager to apply technical skills in a collaborative, fast-paced design environment.

Requirements

  • Completion of junior year of a Mechanical, Electrical, or Architectural Engineering program.
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Knowledge and experience with Revit.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Available to travel for the Internship Summit, hosted at a Zekelman Industries location.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing structural and MEP plans, sections, elevations, details, and other drafting tasks under the supervision of a Project Engineer.
  • Prepare shop drawings for plant fabrication using Revit.
  • Create detailed drawings for shop installations and site-built conditions.
  • Provide calculations for design specifications as needed.
  • Research building codes and standards to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Support multiple projects at various stages, ensuring quality in all deliverables.
  • Participate in weekly design meetings to discuss progress and requirements.
  • Join team members for on-site project observations, including travel to other Z Modular locations.
  • Promote healthy and safe work practices in compliance with company policy and regulatory standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
