About The Position

Upon completion of the program, the Mentor In Training (“MIT”) will contribute to the mission of the PTSD Foundation of America by bringing hope and healing to Combat Veterans and their families suffering from the effects of combat-related Post Traumatic Stress. We attempt to bring healing by directly providing evidence-based peer-to-peer mentoring, both on an individual basis and in group settings. Job Description: The Mentor In Training will learn to become an experienced and trusted adviser. Sharing with others information about their own career path, as well as providing guidance, motivation, emotional support, and role modeling. Deal with at-risk residents, either with substance abuse and/or psychiatric problems, or behavior issues. Obtain knowledge on how to promote values that hint toward recovery, such as positive reinforcement, affirmations, independence, and physical and mental wellness. Also

Requirements

  • HS Diploma or GED (Associates preferred) and possess a valid Driver’s License upon hire.
  • Successfully pass a psych evaluation, background check, drug, and alcohol test
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to cope well under pressure
  • Competency in Microsoft (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word)
  • Must be a Combat Veteran that is a graduate of Camp Hope or equivalent
  • Complete 30-hour Care and Counsel for Combat Trauma class and Safe Talk and ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) Certifications
  • Self-care activities that encompass self-preservation of mind, body, soul, and spirit to maintain safety, competence, and continue personal and professional growth.

Responsibilities

  • Possess some knowledge of PTSD and general mental disorders, psychosocial aspects of PTSD and general mental disorders, and understanding the needs of the Veteran Community.
  • Identify obstacles to living independently and providing appropriate services and support for the resident.
  • Model skills and behaviors reflective of The Foundations' values
  • Meet individually and in groups to encourage and support designated peers
  • Teach and mentor individuals on identified topics, documenting interactions, goals, outcomes, and resources.
  • Conduct one on one peer sessions to determine whether the material is being absorbed and gauge the resident's progress and personal well-being.
  • Understand and maintain familiarity with crisis protocols.
  • Respond to crisis situations as they occur on Camp Hope grounds and events.
  • Intervene as a mediator between residents using conflict resolution techniques to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations.
  • Supervise, mentor, and assist residents individually and in small groups
  • Maintain and update paperwork documenting residents' progress and well-being.
  • Plan instruction, including the creation of lesson plans, modification of schedules, chart creation, and outlines of goals.
  • Any additional duties as assigned.
