About The Position

The Mental Health Security Specialist Shift Supervisor - SES at the Northeast Florida State Hospital is a highly responsible role that involves overseeing the security operations within a large mental health treatment facility. The position requires collaboration with various sections of the facility, independent judgment, and a detail-oriented approach to ensure the safety and security of patients, staff, and property. The incumbent will supervise security personnel, respond to incidents, and implement policies and procedures to maintain a secure environment.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Three years of experience providing safety and security in a mental health or acute care facility.
  • Successful completion of a basic recruit training course can substitute for the required experience.
  • Successful completion of college coursework in social, behavioral, or rehabilitative sciences can substitute for required work experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • A valid Florida Driver's License.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and participate in securing the environment by patrolling activities for the protection and security of buildings, living areas, and individuals.
  • Inspect for fire hazards, unauthorized personnel, and eloping individuals.
  • Investigate reported thefts and destruction of department property.
  • Supervise assigned Mental Health Security Specialists and Centrex Operator.
  • Develop and provide standards of performance, identifying strengths and areas of improvement.
  • Administer consistent and appropriate disciplinary actions after consulting with the Mental Health Security Chief.
  • Respond to calls for service with subordinates to gather knowledge for future evaluations.
  • Monitor maintenance of equipment and supplies to reduce controllable expenses.
  • Compile, maintain, and track pertinent information and stats for performance improvement and CQI projects.
  • Prepare and post matrix work schedules to ensure optimal department functioning.
  • Monitor and approve timecards and leave requests in the KRONOS System.
  • Oversee and monitor overtime and proper usage of stay-over procedures for staffing coverage.
  • Coordinate officers for transports to other facilities and appointments.
  • Ensure routine maintenance of Security Department vehicles and coordinate availability.
  • Implement new policies and procedures within the department.
  • Consult with Staff Development and Training Department for compliance with mandatory training.
  • Substitute for the Mental Health Security Chief as requested.
  • Notify the Mental Health Security Chief of unusual occurrences with pertinent information.
  • Assist with investigations of human rights violations involving mentally challenged individuals.
  • Develop and monitor fire and disaster drills, ensuring appropriate reports are filed.
  • Participate in the interview process for filling vacancies within the Security Department.
  • Provide oversight of safety issues within the Security Department.
  • Represent the department in meetings and special projects as appointed.
  • Maintain records of the uniform-ordering process for officers.
  • Maintain inventory of Security Department assigned equipment and prepare purchase requisitions.
