The Mental Health Therapist ensures the delivery of quality care in accordance to the rules and regulations established by the Los Angeles Department of Mental Health (DMH) for contracted agencies as well as adhering to the mission of St. Joseph Center. The position provides therapy and case management services to adults diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness and substance use disorders.

  • Utilize a harm reduction and trauma informed lens when working with clients.
  • Provide therapeutic services around increasing stabilization, independence and engagement in the community.
  • Provide a wrap-around approach and collaborate with the Intensive Case Management Services team (ICMS), Property Management, Resident Services and all other agencies that are currently providing support to the clients.
  • Meet with clients at their project-based housing to provide mental health support.
  • Provide case management if needed. Link clients to medication management and other resources necessary both internally and externally.
  • Identify clients at risk of losing housing and take appropriate measures to minimize risk by providing stabilizing services.
  • Assess clients and complete intake paperwork, assessments, diagnosis, reassessments and any other necessary documentation.
  • Complete and submit client documentation daily/weekly and meet weekly productivity expectations.
  • Keep highly organized files for each client and enter appropriate data within agency and funder compliance.
  • Provide skill building, rehabilitation and therapeutic services to individuals and groups.
  • Utilize a harm reduction model when working with clients with chemical dependency or abuse issues.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices and best practice models to meet each client’s individual needs.
  • Participate in collaborative meetings with ICMS, property management, resident services and any other agencies that are involved with client treatment and/or housing.
  • Participate in individual clinical supervision, group clinical supervision, and administrative supervision.
  • Participate in the 24-hour on-call system monthly.
  • Must be highly motivated and a self-starter.
  • Ability to communicate with and relate to a diverse group of people including clients, community, and other staff.
  • Excellent organizational skills and capability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong knowledge of homeless services and resources.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with evidence-based practices and best practices including: Harm Reduction, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
  • Ability to conduct home and field visits.
  • Experience providing services to highly vulnerable populations preferred.
  • Demonstrate experience with completing mental health assessments and client treatment plans using diagnostic criteria from the DSM-5/ICD-11.
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in social work, psychology, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Current CA BBS registration (ASW, AMFT, APCC) and/or LMFT, LCSW, or LPCC.
  • Valid California Class C Driver License.
  • Valid automobile liability insurance.
  • Bilingual background is a plus.
  • Full time/Exempt status.
