About The Position

The Woman’s Hospital Perinatal Mental Health Unit is the state’s first inpatient pregnancy and postpartum psychiatric unit. The unit has a specialty focus on perinatal women suffering from acute mental health conditions and requiring detainment for the treatment of perinatal women suffering from mental health illness. As a key member of the healthcare team, the Mental Health Technician will provide essential support to mothers experiencing perinatal mental health challenges. This role involves ensuring the emotional and psychological well-being of patients during the critical perinatal period, and assisting in creating a supportive and therapeutic environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Two years of prior experience in behavioral and mental health

Nice To Haves

  • Perinatal care experience is desirable, but not required
  • Certified Nursing Assistant is highly preferred
  • Relevant certification as a Mental Health Technician is highly desired upon hire
  • Crisis/Violence Intervention Training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide emotional support, guidance, and encouragement to perinatal patients.
  • Provides individualized care and teaching at the bedside including family when appropriate.
  • Treats patients and families with concern, caring, dignity, and respect. Respects cultural diversity and respects "family" as defined by each patient.
  • Monitor patients' mental health status and report any concerns to the healthcare team promptly.
  • Intervene in crisis situations and utilize de-escalation techniques to ensure the safety and well-being of patients and staff.
  • Assist with group therapy sessions and educational classes focusing on perinatal mental health, parenting skills, coping strategies, and emotional regulation.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, documenting observations, perform vital signs, collection of lab specimens, participate in interventions, and treatment plans in compliance with healthcare regulations.
  • Communicate to healthcare team any pertinent information regarding unit and patient status, problems and anticipated problems in an accurate, complete, concise, timely and courteous manner, while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Checks and monitors supplies and forms and restocks as necessary in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Maintains a clean work area/unit, collecting and disposing of soiled items. Cleans, stores, and returns equipment to Central Services in a timely manner and according to hospital policy and procedure.
  • Perform well checks on patients as designated by healthcare team.
  • Conducting environmental safety rounds daily and as designated by healthcare team.
  • Assistance with activities of daily living, including but not limited to patient hygiene, transferring, toileting, and additional individualized support.
  • Perform other duties assigned by department management according to policies and procedures and the mission of Woman's Hospital.
