About The Position

The Mental Health Tech establishes a therapeutic relationship with assigned patients and helps patients with daily living. Responsible for the overall maintenance of a therapeutic environment. Takes vital signs, weighs patients and collects routine specimens. Relies on established guidelines to accomplish tasks and works under close supervision.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Crisis Intervention Training within 90 days of employment
  • Proficient in the English language
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • BLS Certification

Responsibilities

  • Establish therapeutic relationships with assigned patients.
  • Assist patients with daily living activities such as toileting, feeding, and grooming.
  • Maintain a therapeutic environment.
  • Take and record patient vital signs including height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, and respirations under the supervision of a nurse.
  • Assist with the admission process as directed.
  • Provide assistance in group settings under the direction of a nurse or therapist.
  • Assist in moving patients from place to place on and off the unit or area where assigned.
  • Assist with laundering of clothes as necessary or directed.
  • Redirect patients and use proper techniques to prevent patient aggression, falls, or injury.
  • Retrieve medications from the pneumatic tube system and/or pharmacy and deliver them to the nurse or place them in a secure location as determined by the nurse manager.
  • Document vital signs, activities of daily living, sleep hours, safety checks, and environmental checks as appropriate.
  • Assist in documentation of group activities under the direction of a licensed professional.
  • Notify nurse, therapist, or physician of patient behaviors, needs, and safety concerns.
  • Participate in treatment team processes.
  • Conduct phone calls, take messages, and deliver messages as appropriate.
  • Orient patients to the program.
  • Interact with patients on a one-on-one basis in a therapeutic manner and report relevant patient information.
  • Conduct environmental safety checks and notify the nurse of issues.
  • Conduct patient safety checks as directed.
  • Obtain and dispense belongings as appropriate at admission, discharge, and throughout the stay.
  • Follow organizational infection control procedures including handwashing and cleaning.
  • Inspect for contraband items as appropriate.
  • Monitor patients for potential hazards.
