About The Position

The position involves performing standard treatment procedures and activities in a behavioral health setting. Responsibilities include taking vital signs, preparing patient rooms for admissions, handling patient belongings, assisting with meals, and supporting patients in daily activities of living. The role also requires performing contraband checks, maintaining patient confidentiality, and collaborating with other healthcare providers to create a therapeutic environment. The individual will observe patients for escalating behaviors, assist in crisis management, and participate in the admissions process. Additional duties include facilitating community meetings, contributing to treatment planning, and maintaining a safe and clean environment.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
  • High School graduate or GED.
  • Successful passage of the written Cape Cod Hospital Mental Health Specialist exam.
  • Must meet at least one of the following qualifications: One year experience as a Mental Health worker, Mental Health assistant, or Nursing Assistant in a psychiatric facility; or one year experience in a position with direct patient care within a nursing home, group home, substance, psychiatric setting, or general hospital.
  • BLS certification required within 30 days from hire.
  • Completion of an approved de-escalation Certification Course within 30 days from hire.
  • Candidate must be able to demonstrate therapeutic communication with patients and the ability to de-escalate patients.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in Human Service field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs standard treatment procedures and activities such as vital signs, preparing patient rooms for admissions, handling patient belongings, preparing and assisting with meals, distributing and removing food trays, assisting in daily activities of living, ambulating, and finger sticks utilizing the Cape Cod Hospital Glucometer.
  • Performs contraband checks under the direction of the RN in accordance with CCH Behavioral Health Services policies and procedures.
  • Keeps patient information confidential and respects patient's right to privacy in accordance with CCH policies and procedures and State and Federal regulations.
  • Assists with providing, structuring and maintaining a therapeutic environment in collaboration with patients and other mental health care providers.
  • Performs accountability for observation checks, meal watches, and safety checks on all patients and communicates findings to the interdisciplinary team.
  • Observes patients for escalating behavior and reports issues to an RN immediately.
  • Assists with crisis management procedures during clinical/medical emergencies.
  • Participates in the admissions process by completing necessary components for Behavioral Health patient admission.
  • Facilitates and/or participates in occupational, recreation, and patient-centered programs.
  • Escorts patients to other units, program areas, or other locations as needed.
  • Facilitates community meetings and clinical groups.
  • Contributes to interdisciplinary team and treatment planning.
  • Supports additional services as necessary for patient care.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment, reporting equipment out of order, and cleaning assigned equipment.
  • Participates in Process Improvement activities.
  • Completes annual and mandated continuing education programs and training courses specific to providing behavioral health care.
  • Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Performs other work-related duties as directed or requested.
