About The Position

Responsible for the implementation and delivery of mental health services in the assigned school based on statutory and legislative requirements. Familiarity of at-risk behaviors, individual and group counseling, drug and alcohol counseling, and community resources tailored to youth is a requirement for this role. The Mental Health Counselor will work closely with the principal, school guidance counselors, and district representatives to ensure seamless integration of services, effective communication, and documentation as it relates to providing mental health services and resources to students. This position reports to the school principal.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in school counseling or comparable.
  • A minimum of 1 to 3 years related experience.
  • Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Organized, energetic, innovative and professional.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with strong verbal and written English communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Works with the school’s administration to deliver mental health services to students.
  • Coordinate services through the school principal.
  • Implement a referral process as part of the identification of students based on a standardized procedure.
  • Identify and implement an early warning system to assist school in identifying students in need of mental health services.
  • Document services provided to students according to statute and established processes.
  • Utilize a multi-tiered intervention system to prioritize the nature of services provided to students.
  • Collaborate with school and community resources to expand services for students.
  • Implement a process, including legal agreements, for interacting with family physicians when necessary.
  • Participate in documentation process and communication with parents.
  • Establish/coordinate with the school’s crisis intervention team to assist schools in addressing the mental health needs of students.
  • Should be well versed in the following and other related laws: in Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) and the American Counseling Association (ACA), Suicide prevention, threat assessment and incident reporting.
  • Develop pre, ongoing, and post treatment and recovery plans.
