About The Position

The Mental Health Screener provides crisis assessments for adults and children in the psychiatric emergency room/community, medical floors, medical emergency rooms and or affiliated ERs including safety planning, coordination with family and/or support systems, linkage to services, discharge planning and/or initiating voluntary and involuntary admission requests. The Mental Health Screener coordinates with a multidisciplinary team including RNs, peers support specialists, mental health workers, external providers and inpatient teams.

Requirements

  • MSW with a specialization in Mental Health, or MA in Mental Health disciplines
  • One year post-master's experience in a psychiatric setting
  • BA in Mental Health disciplines
  • Three years full-time post-bachelor experience, 1 of which is in a crisis acute setting
  • Clean driver's license as determined by the employer, and validated by the state MVA in which the employee resides
  • Certification eligible as a Screener by the State of New Jersey Division of Mental Health and Hospitals
  • Must obtain screening license through DMHAS within one year of hire

Responsibilities

  • Provides consultation to community agencies and hospitals regarding management of psych ER patients to guidelines of state screening laws for adults and within the CCIS context for children
  • Consults with MDs and other ER staff regarding the management of psychiatric ER patients
  • Maintains DMHA certification as Screener
  • Observes and reports patient response to intervention and treatments
  • Screens adults and children experiencing crisis intervention for children and adults for the appropriate level of care utilizing the least restrictive alternative whenever possible
  • Providers emergency ER assessment and crisis intervention for children, adults and families
  • Assess patients for voluntary hospitalization and involuntary commitment
  • Completes state screening documents as legally required and coordinates completion of necessary documents for children
  • Accepts referral transfers for patients from other hospitals ER and inpatient facilities across the state
  • Arranges and provides crisis stabilization services or alternate treatment when hospitalization can be prevented
  • Answers 24-hour hotline crisis phone and provide emergency response as indicated
  • Screens adults and children on medical units and arranges transfers to STCF to CCIS
  • Provides family crisis stabilization outreach services in the home and community
