About The Position

The Mental Health and Wellness Coordinator is responsible for providing mental health guidance and support to teachers in the classroom and identifying and securing the needed support for children and families experiencing mental health challenges. The applicant brings expertise to the program through knowledge of age-appropriate behavior (birth to five years old), observations, rapport building, and knowledge of community resources.

Requirements

  • Associate or bachelor's degree preferred in the field of social work, clinical psychology, or related field.
  • Experience working with children and families in ethnically diverse low-income communities required.
  • Must have CPR and First Aid Certification or required to obtain within the first year.
  • Physical exam and background checks are required for this position.
  • Travel required locally or long-distance (as needed) for work-related meetings and functions.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and/or reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Supports fidelity of implementation of Pyramid Model in all classrooms and centers.
  • Collaborates with the Education team to develop appropriate behavioral strategies to support children with challenging behaviors in the classroom.
  • Conducts case consultations regarding possible child mental health or behavioral concerns with staff and families.
  • Conducts classroom and center-based child observations to assess interpersonal interactions and determine if additional mental health support/resources are needed to meet child's needs.
  • Discusses observations regarding a child's behavior with families and potential services that could be beneficial to child's development, in coordination with the program's Early Learning Inclusion Specialist and Mental Health Specialist.
  • Prepares observation and assessment reports and assists with referrals to appropriate resources including mental health organizations in the community.
  • Works with families to support the needs of family and child to align educational strategies to the home environment.
  • Provides staff and families education regarding mental health and emotional wellness, and supports them in needed mental health interventions, including the use of home learning activities/PEER Cards.
  • Works with the Head Start program team to coordinate parent workshops to promote active mental health awareness and family engagement in meeting the behavioral health needs of children and families.
  • Participates in assigned meetings, events and training as required.
