About The Position

Job Summary : Assume 24-hr responsibility for the nursing care delivered in ICU and Med/Surg Unit at MMH. Utilizes the nursing process to prescribe, delegate, and coordinate the provision of age-specific nursing care in collaboration with other clinical disciplines. Accountability for patient care is directed towards the resolution of identified patient problems or needs and accomplished through the coordination and performance of therapies involving a multi-disciplinary health care team. Maintains ethical and legal level of conduct. Functions as a preceptor of new employees on documentation requirements and core measures as requested. Serves as an advocate and resource person for the patient, team members and nursing administrative staff. Audits documentation in “live charts’ on daily basis for compliance with core measures, medication reconciliation, admission assessments, initial interviews, pain management, vital signs, follow-up documentation, transfers, etc. Assists in staffing/ensuring adequate staff are available to provide quality care to patients in the ICU and Med/Surg Unit as needed. Additionally, he/she is responsible for functioning well as a member of the multidisciplinary team. Supervisory Responsibilities : Supervises all Med/Surg and ICU nursing staff. Work Environment : This position has an OSHA Category I level of exposure to blood and body substances. Category I tasks are all procedures or other job-related tasks involving an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or body tissues or a potential for spills or splashes with blood, body fluids or tissues. The use of appropriate protective measures is required for every employee engaged in Category I tasks. Duties/Responsibilities : Assists with the coordination of clinical processes affecting nursing areas. Assists in preparation of the fiscal budget for ICU and Med/Surg Unit. Participates in selecting, evaluating, and integrating technology, information management systems to support patient care needs and the efficient use of resources related to quality improvement opportunities. Assures mechanisms are maintained to provide effective communication between nursing units and other departments of the facility. Ensures there are effective mechanisms for recognizing staff performance and expertise, to include reward and recognition processes and tie into the performance evaluation process, supporting customer service and the hospital’s mission. Represents Mizell Memorial Hospital at community, area, state, and national level, serving as a resource for other businesses and organizations regarding healthcare. Complete monthly chart audits, identifies deficient documentation and collaborates with the employee and quality department on remedies of correction. Complete staffing schedule as required to maintain adequate staffing to meet departmental needs (schedule employee PDO, cover sickness, FMLA for staff). Complete staffing payroll biweekly (PDO request, time edit sheets, etc). Monitor departmental floor stock usage, productivity, FTE count, man hour usage to stay within budgeted limits established. Address patient complaints and report to appropriate department. Assist in creating improvement plan according to findings. Maintain/monitor equipment compliance necessary for departmental functions (telehealth cart, crash cart/defibrillators, IV pumps, beds, et). Complete performance evaluations for staff. Fill in for staffing, when needed Perform employee discipline, as necessary, following MMH policy for progressive discipline. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Active license in the state of Alabama as a Registered Nurse with no encumbrance history.
  • Must have at least 3-5 years of clinical experience in ICU or other acute care area.
  • BLS/ACLS/PALS certification required.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, stoop, lift, balance, sit, kneel, reach, pull, talk, see, turn, carry, push, handle and write.
  • This job requires you to reach above the head, push/pull 5 lbs, lift/carry up to 15 lbs, and lift from floor and waist level.

  • Administrative experience with demonstrated competency in management and leadership skills preferred.
