About The Position

Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: NBIX) is offering the opportunity to gain research experience in the world of biotechnology. Our intern program offers exposure to medicinal chemistry research and cross-functional collaboration to bring a molecule from the lab into humans. The medicinal chemistry team has a strong reputation in the industry for CNS-based medicines.

Requirements

Candidate must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in one of the following areas: Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry
Practical experience with organic synthesis, methods development, total synthesis, or similar
Ability to work in a laboratory environment
Prior laboratory experience (Minimum>1 year)
Good verbal and written communication skills
Ability to think creatively and be a team player
Interest in attending various program events, including social gatherings, career development workshops, and more

Ability to commit to a 10-week, full-time summer program

Responsibilities

Synthesizing novel chemical intermediates and final compounds
Reviewing the chemical literature to obtain procedures, guide reaction sequences
Setting up, monitoring by TLC and/or LCMS, and working-up reactions
Purifying compounds by automated chromatography (ISCO combi-flash or ACCQprep) or recrystallization
Learning about and applying medicinal chemistry and CNS-drug discovery principles to drug discovery projects
Generating and interpreting biological data
Helping develop plans to address medicinal chemistry goals
Maintaining a complete laboratory notebook
Interacting with other chemists and pharmacologists within the company
Completing a special project and present the recommendations to management upon completion
