Responsibilities

  • Deal with patients and their families in situations requiring tact and discretion.
  • Requisition a variety of stock, medical equipment, and supplies based on an understanding of medical procedures and unit requirements.
  • Schedule appointments and treatments, estimating priority sequence or length of treatment anticipated.
  • Transfer doctors' orders, diet, and therapy instructions to patient charts; notify nurses and other appropriate personnel of revisions.
  • Make notations on charts of special medical or consultation charges.
  • Order tests and make appointments, accept and record lab reports and orders prescriptions.
  • Assemble patient charts and prepare other medical record forms required for patient admission, transfer, or dismissal.
  • Act as unit receptionist, receiving and relaying telephone messages to medical staff; distribute mail, flowers, and messages to patients and direct visitors.
  • Type a variety of forms and correspondence.
  • Transcribe physician's orders from patient chart to the proper forms in preparation for verification by professional staff.
  • Provide routine information as requested to staff, patients, visitors, and the public; greet patients and visitors.
  • Track admissions, discharges, transfer, and room changes for census purposes; complete proper forms and records for patient admissions, transfers, discharges, examinations, and testing.
  • Maintain unit files; run errands and transport supplies, specimens, and other materials as needed.
  • Respond to established emergency procedures.
  • Prepare identification bands.
