Requirements

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in MT, MLT, CLS, or MLS
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist, MT(ASCP), CLS(ASCP), (AMT) or equivalent

  • Knowledge of current medical terminology to perform various laboratory tests and to communicate with physicians, staff, and patients
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks and troubleshooting of instrumentation
  • Knowledge of safety requirements to provide instructions and to recognize hazardous conditions
  • Ability to read and understand information about instrumentation in the laboratory field

Responsibilities

  • Interprets physician orders
  • Completes tests and distributes to providers
  • Assists with phlebotomy
  • Conducts chemical analyses of body fluids such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal and abnormal components
  • Studies blood cells, their numbers, and morphology
  • Performs blood group, type, and screening compatibility tests for transfusion purposes
  • Analyzes test results and enters data into the lab's information system
  • Performs quality control studies to ensure accuracy of clinical data
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedules and procedures
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test results
  • Verifies instrument functioning by checking and calibrating specific lab instruments; documents data
  • Records on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed of equipment
  • Reports test results to physicians
  • Performs sample sorting and log-in per established operating guidelines
  • Prepares analytical equipment for daily operation per operating procedure guidelines
  • Processes specimens per operating guidelines
  • Evaluates patient, control, and proficiency data per established quality assurance protocols
  • Transmits patient data via laboratory information system protocol
  • Performs required instrument maintenance with appropriate documentation
  • Performs, evaluates, and documents all required quality control procedures
  • Performs all required manual testing according to established procedures
  • Performs all housekeeping duties of the work area and general laboratory
  • Assists in inventory control
  • Participates actively in all laboratory quality assurance functions
  • Performs all required reagent checks, labeling, and inventory
  • Participates, when requested, in training/teaching new employees
  • Respects the confidentiality of patient records
  • Coordinates work load to maximize productivity
  • Completes all procedures expected in the scheduled time without loss of work quality
  • Notifies management regarding trends, changes, or problems as they occur
  • Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results
  • Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens
  • Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed
  • Follows the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either corrects the problems or immediately notifies the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications
  • Attends meetings and participates on committees as requested
  • Reviews current literature and attends training sessions and seminars to keep informed of new developments in the field
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as directed
