About The Position

The Medical Technologist is responsible for inventory, process and store blood components. Perform pre- and post-transfusion testing on donor blood and patient samples. Prepare and issue blood components.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences or a related field.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist or equivalent by an organization of clinical laboratory sciences.
  • Able to independently organize and prioritize work.
  • Able to communicate effectively with other medical personnel.
  • Able to demonstrate and explain technical procedures and policies.
  • Able to recognize problems and take appropriate action.
  • Possess skills basic to the practice of medical laboratory technology.
  • Possess the ability to frequently walk, stand and bend.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Specialist in Blood Banking is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Use the computer system to enter results, manage blood orders, perform inquiry functions and enter corrections when indicated.
  • Perform inventory functions for blood components including delivery to computer system and testing prior to use.
  • Assess sample suitability and labeling acceptability.
  • Perform testing using automated and manual techniques.
  • Determine the need for further pre-transfusion testing using manual and automated techniques.
  • Select appropriate blood components and perform donor testing if indicated.
  • Perform routine and urgent cross-matching.
  • Verify and issue blood components.
  • Perform required investigation and testing of a transfusion reaction.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve instrument and equipment problems.
  • Communicate with other health care professionals concerning the results of blood bank testing.
  • Participate in on-going quality assurance activities for reagents, equipment and personnel.
  • Perform routine and complex antibody studies.
  • Assist in the teaching of CLS students in a laboratory setting.
  • Assess blood needs and arrange for procurement of required products.
  • Prepare donor units for emergency storage and transfusion.
  • Follow safety requirements for personal protections and patient safety.
  • Participate in continuing education programs.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information and is sensitive to the privacy of all staff members.
