Under the supervision of Clinical Laboratory Director, responsible for performing professional laboratory work following established clinic procedures and performing chemical and biological tests on patient specimens for medical diagnosis. Medical technologists conduct laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. They analyze bodily fluids like blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine the presence of normal and abnormal components. Medical technologists typically work in laboratory facilities. The Laboratory Department is a 24-hour/7-days a week operation, providing laboratory services to an inpatient and outpatient population of all ages.

  • Performs routine and special laboratory tests.
  • Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Calls critical test results to physicians or nurses immediately and according to established criteria.
  • Performs quality-control tests within designated areas and within designated guidelines. Holds patient results until out-of-control situations are resolved. Reports an unresolved situation to the laboratory manager.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshooting following department preventive maintenance schedules. Performs and documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, routine maintenance, problems and maintains corrective action log.
  • Helps evaluate new techniques and procedures in terms of space and personnel requirements, method comparison, cost analysis, and the establishment of reference intervals.
  • Writes and revises technical procedures and conducts in-service classes for other laboratory personnel under the guidance of the lab manager.
  • Performs clerical functions associated with the designated laboratory area- Phlebotomy, General Laboratory, Hematology, Chemistry, Immunology, Blood Bank and Microbiology.
  • Performs specimen collection and processing duties as needed or assigned and according to policies established in the phlebotomy area.
  • Utilizes techniques of infection control, including proper hand washing and observing standard precautions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, biology, chemistry, or related science from an accredited college or university.
  • Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English.
  • Appropriate education to obtain and maintain Clinical Laboratory Technologist State of Nevada based on licensure criteria.
  • Recent general clinical laboratory experience is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Nevada Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Specialist, Provisional Clinical Lab Technologist, or Provisional Specialist license within 7 months from date of hire is required.
  • General Supervisor licensure is also acceptable and will supersede the Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Specialist licensure in an assigned discipline.
