About The Position

The Medical Technologist II performs routine and specialized moderate- to high-complexity laboratory testing on blood and body fluids with minimal supervision. This role ensures accurate and timely test results by adhering to quality control procedures, performing instrument maintenance, and troubleshooting equipment or assay issues. The Medical Technologist II also supports laboratory accreditation efforts, mentors new staff and students, and contributes to departmental quality initiatives and regulatory readiness.

Requirements

  • 2-4 years of experience as a Medical Technologist in an acute care or clinical laboratory setting required
  • Demonstrated proficiency in laboratory testing procedures and instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with laboratory regulatory standards (e.g., CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission).
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced setting.
  • Proficiency in Laboratory Information Systems and basic computer applications.
  • ASCP - Medical Technologist or equivalent (ABB, CLS, HEW) required
  • State licensure as applicable by law required

Responsibilities

  • Performs moderate- and high-complexity testing across laboratory disciplines, ensuring accurate, complete, and timely results in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Documents and reports test results in the Laboratory Information System with attention to detail and adherence to required turnaround times.
  • Performs daily, weekly, and monthly instrument maintenance, function checks, and calibrations; promptly reports equipment malfunctions to the section supervisor.
  • Follows established quality control procedures, analyzes control data, and resolves out-of-range results to maintain testing reliability.
  • Completes proficiency testing and participates in performance improvement and peer review activities in support of laboratory accreditation.
  • Assists with data collection, audits, and preparation for regulatory surveys (e.g., CAP, Joint Commission, CLIA), and meets with surveyors as needed.
  • Trains and mentors new employees and students on laboratory procedures, documentation standards, and safety protocols.
  • Maintains accurate records of test performance, QC logs, maintenance logs, and other regulatory documentation.
  • Adheres to safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), infection control procedures, and hazardous materials handling.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
