Performs diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid physicians in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of various disease states.

  • Follows standardized procedures and helps prepare samples for testing.
  • Collects samples and analyze bodily fluids and substances for abnormalities. Collects blood and study blood samples used in transfusions.
  • Operates laboratory equipment in a high-quality, effective manner.
  • Analyzes test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits, and reports/documents results per organizational standards.
  • Performs automated tests using computerized instruments & automated equipment.
  • Performs manual tests based on detailed instructions from a physician.
  • Runs tests and analyzes the results to be reported to the patient, physician or registered nurse.
  • Performs Quality Assurance work to ensure accuracy of equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by laboratory supervisors or director.
  • Performs phlebotomy procedures in accordance with established laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Assists with all general clerical work such as QC, QA, and answering phones, and looking up reports.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots laboratory equipment.
  • Reviews, approves, and maintains all patient and QC results on a daily basis.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining procedure manuals.
  • Accurately register client samples, results with comments, order tests, cancel and add tests as required.
  • Works unsupervised and uses good judgment to make independent decisions in any department assigned to.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in assigned departments.
  • Assists in evaluating new laboratory equipment and problem laboratory procedures.
  • Assists in training new employees on laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technologist or Medical Lab Scientist is required.
  • Active and valid license with ASCP or comparable National certification at hire or eligible to sit for certification within 6 months.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) is required through American Heart Association upon hire.
  • One year experience in a clinical laboratory as a technologist, hospital environment needed.
  • For third shift, at least three years of experience is preferred.
  • Master’s degree is preferred.
