The position involves performing chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests to provide data for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease. The role applies techniques used in fields of microbiology, histo-pathology, hematology, diagnostic immunology, immunohematology, chemistry, or morphological examinations.

  • Conducts laboratory testing and implements actions based on standard operating procedures.
  • Organizes workflow to ensure efficient and accurate output.
  • Reviews and verifies results for accuracy and credibility prior to release.
  • Records and reports results in a timely manner.
  • Problem-solves to achieve acceptable test results and ensures optimal system and instrument operations.
  • Interprets and verifies lab findings with regard to specimen type and quality.
  • Correlates test results with available clinical information and other laboratory data.
  • Analyzes and evaluates each testing process to assure valid and accurate final results.
  • Maintains and updates technical knowledge and skills through participation in meetings and continuing education.
  • Assists in the development of operational procedures for effective workflow.
  • Serves as a resource for automated and other equipment, and in standard operation decision-making.
  • Coordinates laboratory operations in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Ensures compliance with Quality Control and Quality Assurance Programs.
  • Addresses quality of service issues and implements internal quality assurance monitors or projects.
  • Takes corrective action to resolve problems and reviews unresolved issues with a supervisor.
  • Reports action limit results according to standard procedures.
  • May serve as Testing Personnel for High Complexity Testing as defined by CLIA 88.
  • Performs proficiency testing and reports results.
  • Advises providers and nursing personnel on correct procedures for specimen collection, handling, and processing.
  • Assists providers in determining appropriate laboratory services for patient care.
  • Assists in training technical students and/or new technologist employees.
  • Assists in the development of technical procedures and writing training procedures.
  • Reviews and critiques new procedures developed by others.
  • Detects and repairs subtle instrument and/or reagent problems.
  • Experience in laboratory testing and procedures.
  • Knowledge of microbiology, histo-pathology, hematology, diagnostic immunology, immunohematology, chemistry, or morphological examinations.
  • Ability to interpret and verify lab findings.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with Quality Control and Quality Assurance Programs.
  • Ability to train and mentor new staff.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist or equivalent.
  • Experience with high complexity testing as defined by CLIA 88.
  • Familiarity with laboratory automation and equipment.
