About The Position

Under the direction of the Laboratory Medical Director and Director of Laboratory Services, the position involves performing clinical testing in at least two of the following areas: blood bank, microbiology, serology, chemistry, hematology, or urinalysis. The role requires obtaining and receiving specimens, understanding method principles, performing QC procedures, and interpreting results as to accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits. The individual will work independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines. The current shift is from 2030 to 0700.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology or related science with approved medical clinical training.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in laboratory work (may be part of clinical training program).
  • New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist license.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains blood specimens by skin puncture or venipuncture using appropriate technique and maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test performed.
  • Prepares samples for analysis accurately and efficiently, evaluating the suitability of specimens for analysis and appropriately accepting or rejecting specimens according to laboratory policy.
  • Evaluates laboratory results through correlation with common physiological conditions and reports test results accurately and timely per laboratory protocols.
  • Anticipates and recognizes errors, responding appropriately by reporting to supervisor or technologist in charge.
  • Follows work instructions for critical values and delta checks.
  • Conducts established quality control procedures on analytical tests, procedures, equipment, reagents, media, and products, maintaining accurate documentation per department protocols.
  • Reviews QC and patient data from the previous day, including documentation and problems referred to supervisor.
  • Maintains competence needed for health care advancements, scientific research, technology, new equipment, and/or new procedures.
  • Completes education and competency documentation before due date.
  • Provides clinical orientation and supervision for new or less experienced personnel as assigned and can function as acting supervisor as qualified and assigned.
