Responsibilities

• Routine and complex histopathological and cytopathological procedures to include handling cell blocks, frozen sections, bone marrows, autopsies, and fine-need biopsies.
• Preparing technically adequate slides of surgical, cytology, and autopsy specimens by processing, embedding tissue, cutting, staining (including immunohistochemistry), and cover slipping.
• Using all forms of humidification with the appropriate devices, including aerosols and high flow systems.
• Processing specimens in a timely manner, following written guidance in Lab policy for specific turnaround time rates.
• Understanding method specific Analytical Measuring Range for each test.
• Performing new reagent lot-to-lot studies as needed, including proper documentation and determining acceptability of results.
• Performing Calibration of all methods as needed according to instrument specifications, including review of calibration results and determining acceptability.
• Running QC and reviewing results after instrument calibrations.
• Performing and reporting all tests in accordance with established procedures to meet specific turn-around-time criteria.
• Preparing and loading onto the instrument reagents, calibrators, and quality control materials as needed.
• Promoting a culture of safety within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service and working in a safe manner, following established procedures.

Requirements

• Education: Four academic years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation such as biological science or chemistry; or successful completion of two academic years of study above high school that included at least 24 semester hours in Chemistry and/or in appropriate fields of biological science and successful completion of a 12-month program of education and training in histopathology or cytotechnology.
• Experience: One year of experience required.
• Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
• At least one year of experience with routine and complex histopathological and cytopathological procedures.
• Maintains active, current, unrestricted certification as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technician, or Clinical Laboratory Specialist by the American Medical Technologists or American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
• Hold a RT and Polysomnographic Technology license by the state of California.
