About The Position

The Med Tech/MLS is responsible for the processing of laboratory specimens and reporting of results in all areas of the clinical laboratory. Maintains up to date and accurate laboratory records. Follows laboratory policies and procedures; maintains quality control practices in the laboratory.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Biology or Medical/Clinical Laboratory Science or Equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • Strong computer skills with the ability to navigate EMR programs
  • Ability to safely and correctly operate a variety of laboratory equipment
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a Medical/Clinical Laboratory Science training program which meets CLIA requirements preferred
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical/Clinical Lab Scientist Preferred
  • Laboratory minimum 2 years Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Conducts, evaluates and documents Quality Control in the lab; runs QC at appropriate times per policy; reviews QC results before reporting patient results; never reports patient results in out of control situations; notifies supervisor of QC warnings, trends and biases; documents action taken; after changing reagent lots, makes special QC run to verify method performance.
  • Ensures daily worksheets/ log books/ charts are all filled out completely, correctly and legibly; correctly handles and documents all critical laboratory results; releases correct results- (corrected results are not required).
  • Accurately orders tests from outpatient orders; faxes reports (EMR and manual), and scans orders and reports; accurately enters diagnosis codes into EMR and obtains signed ABNs when necessary.
  • Safely draws blood on all patient types and ages.
  • Assesses work needs and completes tasks in order of priority in the assigned work area.
  • Ensures correct patient identity using two patient identifiers; collects and labels specimens.
  • Performs EKGs accurately using correct Medical Record numbers and names, and ensures results are transmitted to the EMR system.
  • Reviews department inventory levels and maintains appropriate level of supplies.
  • Follows standard precautions and uses equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Performs all aspects of the position in an environment that optimizes safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors; utilizes established hand-off communication protocols.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all department data and activities.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in work schedules.
  • Complies with all established safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
