The Medical Technologist analyzed samples of blood, tissue and body fluids to determine chemical content, cell count, drug levels or blood type; they may also search for specific microorganisms like bacteria or parasites. Preparing the samples for examination, using automated equipment and specialized instrumentation, performing numerous complicated tests simultaneously, and accurately interpreting the results are all part of a Medical Technologist's job. This position plays a vital role in diagnosing and treating diseases by performing complex laboratory tests on patient specimens. This position requires precision, analytical thinking, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of laboratory safety and accuracy. The Medical Technologist works closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure timely and reliable test result.

  • Determines normal and abnormal components of body fluids by conducting chemical analyses of blood, urine, and spinal fluids
  • Processes and receives samples of blood, urine and body fluids
  • Performs and interprets clinical laboratory tests, obtaining data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease
  • Analyzes blood cells by counting and identifying cells, using microscopic techniques and procedures
  • Prepares blood, plasma, and platelets for transfusions by conducting blood group, type, and compatibility tests
  • Ensures operation of analyzers and other laboratory equipment by calibrating; completing preventive maintenance requirements and performs quality control; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques
  • Functions independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines and records all data obtained in the computer and/or log book
  • Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies
  • Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results
  • Prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or similar degree in chemistry or biology with required semester hours and one year of training in a clinical laboratory as per CLIA and NJ DOH regulations
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology Certification (ASCP) or equivalent certification or eligible
  • American Medical Technologist (AMT) or eligible
  • Experience in chemistry, hematology, microbiology or blood bank
  • Entry-level candidates should have at least 1-2 years of clinical internship or lab rotation experience
