Ann & Robert H. Handles specialized research test processing, packaging and distribution and coordinates the appropriate handling of clinical samples from within the hospital for distribution to outside testing laboratories. These activities are performed independently or with minimal supervision. Serves as a resource person for laboratory test menus, sample types, appropriate test locations, etc. The position actively supports the Hospital and the Department’s Continuous Quality Improvement and Customer Service goals, through modeling of appropriate behavior and by providing a work environment conducive to attaining these goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in chemical or biological sciences, or associate’s degree in laboratory sciences or medical laboratory technology which consists of 60 semester hours including a minimum of either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or equivalent combination of science courses (i.e. chemistry, biology, medical laboratory technology) or, qualified as a technologist under the provisions in 42CFR493.1489(b)(2)(B)(4) or 42CFR493.1489(b)(2)(B)(5)(i) for high complexity testing on or before April 24, 1995.
  • Meets all regulatory requirements for moderate or high complexity testing as appropriate within assigned area.
  • Must be detail oriented and have the ability to multi-task.

Responsibilities

  • Follows clinical laboratory procedures and policies in the performance of research and clinical processing, send out and reporting processes.
  • Applies scientific methods in problem solving and evaluates new methods and techniques.
  • Assures that quality control criteria are met and adheres to established laboratory policies in handling hazardous substances.
  • Recognizes the clinical significance of each test performed, and reports results within established time frames.
  • Identifies and correlates possible sources and nature of test interference/problems, and makes appropriate recommendations as to course of action, based on test theory and knowledge.
  • Participates in research studies throughout the hospital.
  • Has a complete understanding of research services in the department from scheduling to registration, research test order, processing, storage, shipping and billing.
  • Assures effective communication with physicians, reference labs, and other staff members regarding specimen requirements, tests available, test scheduling, etc.
  • Assists the director, administrator, medical director, and manager in assuring compliance with governmental, accreditation, and hospital standards.
  • Instructs and medical technology students, fellows, residents, new laboratory personnel, and other hospital professionals in laboratory procedures as needed.
  • Assists in the development and evaluation of new procedures and protocols.
  • Maintains knowledge and utilizes appropriate resources to provide consultative, educational, technical, and informational services as needed to families, patients, and hospital personnel.
  • Ensures the accuracy and completeness of results, quality control/quality assurance activities, and documentation.
  • Participates in competency evaluations and continuing education.
  • Ensures proper handling of new requests for “send-out” testing to include completion of forms and submission to appropriate Medical Director for evaluation.
  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
