The position involves the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures. The role is essential in ensuring accurate testing, timely reporting of results, and adherence to quality control measures. The individual will also be responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols.

  • Perform accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Evaluate specimens for acceptability for proper testing.
  • Investigate and document problems with unacceptable specimens.
  • Organize workload for maximum efficiency to complete tests being performed.
  • Accurately perform tests as requested on specimens received, ensuring correct patient encounter is used and appropriate procedure is performed.
  • Verify accuracy of results before reporting results.
  • Report test results in a timely manner according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Follow established procedures for laboratory quality control and report discrepancies to the Medical Technologist II or Director/Supervisor.
  • Perform daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate.
  • Troubleshoot instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur.
  • Comply with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures.
  • Perform phlebotomy (venipunctures, fingersticks, heelsticks) as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedure.
  • Attend all required safety training programs and describe responsibilities related to safety.
  • Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees.
  • Promote effective working relations and work effectively as part of a department/unit team.
  • Maintain work area and perform daily cleaning of work area.
  • Assist with orientation of laboratory procedures for students and/or new laboratory employees.
  • Experience in laboratory testing and analysis.
  • Knowledge of laboratory protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to perform quality control and troubleshoot laboratory equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in testing and reporting results.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist or equivalent.
  • Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Familiarity with safety protocols in a laboratory setting.
