Under the supervision of the Core Lab Assistant Manager and in accordance with hospital and laboratory policies and procedures, performs moderate and high-complexity testing in the hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, and chemistry departments. The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of routine and complex laboratory procedures using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation, and equipment on a wide variety of biological specimens to assist the provider in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. To exercise professional judgment to recognize, prioritize, and facilitate varying test requests and workload in an efficient manner. To assume responsibility and accountability for accuracy of procedures performed.

  • Assists accessioning as needed to receive and process laboratory specimens.
  • Successfully operates instrumentation in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Performs testing and quality control using approved laboratory procedures and instrumentation.
  • Exercise professional judgment to recognize, prioritize and facilitate varying test requests and workload in an efficient manner.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and department meetings as required.
  • Perform instrument/equipment maintenance according to department guidelines and manufacturer's specifications.
  • Mentor students and new employees by providing a positive experiential learning environment.
  • Is aware of and adheres to regulatory guidelines.
  • Assist Technical Specialist and Assistant Manager with duties as assigned.
  • Cross training to all areas in the department is required.
  • Think critically and work efficiently in high stress situations.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, nursing units, providers, and laboratory leadership.
  • Uses Tools and Tones for High Reliability in order to promote a culture of safety.
  • Accepts responsibilities and maintains an attitude conducive to a cooperative and productive work environment.
  • Adheres to all policies described in the Aultman Hospital Code of Conduct and Employee Handbook.
  • Bachelor of Science degree, including twelve-month training in an approved program for Medical Laboratory Science, with certification as a Clinical Lab Scientist by an approved certifying agency or an Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Science with certification as a Medical Lab Technician by an approved certifying agency.
  • Prior experience is preferred but not required.
