The Pathology Department at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a full time Medical Technologist 3 in the UHealth Tower Hospital. CORE JOB SUMMARY The Medical Technologist 3 performs a variety of complex and special microbiological, molecular biological and immunological tests on body specimens to provide data for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease. Moreover, the incumbent facilitates quality assurance and instrument maintenance. 1st shift - 06:00 AM – 02:30 PM Rotating Weekends

  • Verifies identification of specimen with physicians’ orders, prepares specimens for testing, and handles all specimens in a safe and careful manner.
  • Analyzes results of testing and interprets abnormal or unusual results.
  • Researches and prepares all pertinent patient data and refers all data and testing results to pathologists for evaluation and sign-out.
  • Calibrates equipment, orders supplies, and maintains inventory of relevant forms and materials.
  • Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action while supporting laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems.
  • Administers quality-control tests, according to procedure, and maintains appropriate data recording.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Document all regulatory logs, including but not limited to decontamination log, rejection log, Temperature and humidity log, and correcting report log.
  • Assist supervisor and/or Lead tech in all laboratory compliance activities, including but not limited to Instruments or Method Validation, Linearities, inter/intra precision, Instruments to instruments comparison, QC troubleshooting/review, or any other performance study assigned.
  • Assist the supervisor with the training of assigned new personnel or students, either undergrad or postgrad.
  • Become competent in all core test systems during the initial period of training, including but not limited to Chemistry, Chemistry manual, Hematology, manual/automated differentials, Blood Gases, Coagulation, Urinalysis, automated and manual.
  • Bachelor’s degree in laboratory science or related field.
  • Florida License for Medical Technologist
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of hazardous chemical waste management, including: Proper identification and labeling of hazardous materials. Appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Understanding of hazardous waste characteristics, volume generation limits, and accumulation time limits. Implementation of spill control and prevention measures. Accurate recordkeeping and adherence to regulatory compliance. Safe handling, storage, and inspection of hazardous waste containers.
