Requirements

  • A minimum of 3 years previous experience in blood banking.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or a related science is required.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or equivalent).
  • Eligible for classification as a supervisor by the Georgia Department of Human Resources.
  • Must have technical expertise for all procedures within a functional area.
  • Requires independent judgment and responsibility with minimum technical supervision.
  • Requires strong organizational capabilities, good communication skills and exhibits enthusiasm and willingness to work with others.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all activities as defined by the Med Tech I job description.
  • Performs assigned testing as scheduled.
  • Performs assigned verification duties.
  • Assists in designing, implementing, and evaluating new procedures and revising existing procedures.
  • Understands and adheres to Lean principles such as standard work and 5S.
  • Assists in monitoring accuracy, precision, and efficiency in the performance of assays and the operation of equipment.
  • Assists in the examination of reporting of patient and proficiency results.
  • Assists in the resolution of problems in the specialty area.
  • Updates the Operation Supervisor of all related issues.
  • Oversees quality control and implements corrective action when indicated or as assigned.
  • Monitors all performance check systems and preventative maintenance for instruments and equipment.
  • Assists with evaluation and selection of new equipment.
  • Completes applicable training of all employees and students who may rotate or work in the department.
  • Assists with the development of training modules as requested.
  • Maintains appropriate level of supplies and reagents.
  • Assists with maintaining current files of reference materials.
  • Assists with staff schedule to maintain a minimum of two deep coverage.
  • Assists with reconciling billing as assigned.
  • Assists with auditing daily, weekly, and monthly activity reports.
  • Assists operations supervisor and manager with annual performance evaluations.
  • Assists with training, staff development, and competency programs for the department.
  • Provides portions of new employee orientation and staff development.
  • Promotes a cooperative environment between students and staff.
  • Presents practical information to students through various methods.
  • Assesses practical abilities by administering exams.
  • Evaluates interactive behavior, theoretical knowledge, and practical abilities of students.
  • Ensures the status of mandatory competency and training requirements are communicated to the Operations Supervisor.
  • Assists with the documentation of competency and training assessment as needed.
  • Maintains records of instrument maintenance.
  • Notifies the Operations Supervisor of any instrument, calibration, or linearity issues.
  • Verifies all daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance is performed and documented as scheduled.
  • Makes recommendations concerning instrument replacements, upgrades, and/or operations.
  • Assists with the validation, precision, and correlation studies of new methods for existing and new instrumentation.
  • Performs or assists in all instrument troubleshooting.
  • Monitors instrument reagent and supplies inventories.
  • Monitors calibration and linearity checks as defined in the instrument manuals.
