About The Position

Join a mission-driven team helping Montana’s at-risk youth build brighter futures as a Medical Technician at the Montana Youth Challenge Academy (MYCA) in Dillon. About the Academy The Montana Youth Challenge Academy is a 22‑week, quasi‑military residential program for approximately 100 youth ages 16–18, focused on building self‑esteem, discipline, education, life skills, physical fitness, and responsible citizenship so participants can become productive members of their communities. Position Overview The Medical Technician serves as MYCA’s resident authority on personal and community health, coordinating medical care for cadets and supporting a safe, structured residential environment. This position manages day‑to‑day medical needs, responds to urgent or emergency health issues, oversees medical records and supplies, and provides health education to cadets and staff. The Medical Technician reports to the Support Services Supervisor, works closely with a Registered Nurse, and provides direction to contract nursing and Medication Pass staff.

Requirements

Knowledge of emergency medical care, routine nursing procedures (e.g., pulse measurement, urinalysis), and personal health issues such as diabetes, asthma, hygiene, and substance abuse.
Familiarity with medical records management, HIPAA and confidentiality requirements, medical billing and insurance (including Medicaid and workers’ compensation), and basic inventory and contract monitoring practices.
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical medical information clearly to youth, families, and staff with varied backgrounds.
Ability to assess the severity of illnesses and injuries, set priorities in emergency situations, and maintain composure and sound judgment in a dynamic residential setting with at‑risk youth.
Ability to build rapport and maintain effective working relationships with cadets, families, medical providers, and a multidisciplinary staff team, and to work effectively in diverse environments.
Ability to follow and support Department of Military Affairs (DMA) safety and OSHA requirements and adhere to MYCA policies and procedures.
Certification as an EMT or LPN (or equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities).
At least two (2) years of related medical experience.
Valid Montana driver’s license.
CPR/First Aid certification (Within 6 months of hire).

Responsibilities

Coordinate medical care for cadets, including office visits, hospital stays, medications, medical equipment, and follow‑up care for medical, dental, vision, psychiatric, and related health needs.
Serve as the primary point of contact for parents/guardians, contract medical staff, pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, community health centers, and insurance representatives on cadet health issues.
Monitor physician orders and treatment plans (e.g., medication changes, post‑surgical care, dietary changes) and ensure proper implementation and follow‑through.
Oversee random and scheduled substance abuse testing to ensure compliance with state and federal law, MYCA codes of conduct, and standard operating procedures.
Provide direct nursing care and first aid to cadets, including vital signs, basic assessments, sick call, support during physical exams, and emergency stabilization.
Maintain and analyze medical records and health profiles, track trends in illnesses, injuries, and service utilization, and recommend corrective or preventive actions as needed.
Manage inventories of medical supplies, medications, and durable medical equipment, ensuring safe storage, sanitization, accountability, and cost-effectiveness.
Educate cadets on health topics such as hygiene, diabetes and asthma management, substance abuse, sexual health, prenatal and postpartum care, tobacco cessation, and other personal health issues.
Coordinate medical program operations, including participation in medical review boards, policy and procedure development, and contract monitoring for medical providers.
Review medical information for incoming applicants to assess MYCA’s capacity to support their needs and plan appropriate accommodations.
Provide occasional backup support to other Support Services functions such as events (Acclimation, Graduation), post‑residential placements, recruitment, and general office operations.
