About The Position

The Medical Technician-Phlebotomist position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves performing technical work in various laboratory areas, including phlebotomy, chemistry, and microbiology. Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 level in laboratory support work.
  • Completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in relevant subjects (transcripts required).
  • Combination of specialized experience and education beyond the first 60 semester hours of study.

  • Experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Perform phlebotomy using established venipuncture techniques and universal precautions.
  • Conduct specimen collection, labeling, accessioning, and distribution to appropriate lab areas.
  • Evaluate and interpret patient orders in the computer system for testing requirements.
  • Collect samples with knowledge of anticoagulants and testing requirements.
  • Perform positive identification of patients and specimens throughout the collection process.
  • Coordinate with clinical departments for order entry and accessioning of test orders.
  • Maintain laboratory records in compliance with CLIA and local requirements.
  • Observe patients during and after collection for any adverse responses.
  • Handle unusual patient situations appropriately and apply pressure to puncture sites as needed.
  • Perform lactose and glucose tolerance tests and interpret results accordingly.
  • Assist with inventory monitoring and maintenance of phlebotomy supplies.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory centrifuges and equipment.
  • Conduct periodic maintenance and quality control of laboratory equipment.
  • Process and prepare test samples for shipping following safety protocols.
