About The Position

The Medical Technician - Phlebotomist position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves performing various duties in the Phlebotomy and Laboratory Medicine Service at the VA Outpatient Clinic in Columbus, OH. Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
  • Proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients is required.
  • Six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience in a related field is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations.
  • Experience in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work.

Responsibilities

  • Follow procedures for patient identification, sample procurement, and specimen labeling.
  • Perform routine venipuncture specimen collections from patients.
  • Maintain the physical condition of samples and respond to time factors to ensure the physiologic state of the specimen is maintained.
  • Provide education to patients for proper collection techniques.
  • Prepare samples for testing, including labeling, centrifugation, decanting, and aliquoting.
  • Maintain adequate supplies for all phlebotomy and specimen procurement procedures.
  • Answer incoming calls for the laboratory service, relaying accurate information or referring callers to technical personnel.
  • Perform standard diagnostic tests/procedures such as bleeding time, occult blood, urine dipstick, pregnancy test, and fingerstick glucose.
  • Process reference laboratory specimens.
  • Perform sterilization on the autoclave and clean glassware and other reusable items.
  • Identify and appropriately respond to adverse reactions such as fainting, nausea, vomiting, convulsions, and arrests.
