About The Position

Job Summary Job Title: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse Location: Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Charleston): 109 Bee St, Charleston, SC 29401 Period of Performance: 3/1/2026 – 2/28/2031 Shift Schedule: 1930-0800: 12 (twelve) hour night shift with alternating weekend shifts; Weekends, Weekdays and Holidays required. Position/Unit Description: The RN will provide care in an acute care medical/surgical unit. The role encompasses services related to spinal cord injuries, telemetry, orthopedics, medicine, oncology, neurology, acute rehabilitation, general surgery, and post-operative care. Primary Responsibilities Key Responsibilities: Skills: RN to work on an acute care medical/surgical unit shall be responsible for: Patient assessments Medication administration IV therapy Interdisciplinary team coordination Telemetry monitoring Admissions, discharges, and internal and external transfers Delegating to assistive personnel Electronic medical record documentation Patient transport Emergency response procedures. Competency in the areas of: o NGT insertion o Chest tubes o Trach care o Dressing changes o Monitor patient condition, report and treat applicable findings o IV insertions o Thoracentesis o Paracentesis o Lumbar puncture o Twelve lead EKG o Foley Cather insertion and discontinuation o Doppler pressure o Orthostatic blood pressure o Wound therapy: (wound vac), dressing changes o Cardiopulmonary resuscitation o Blood transfusion o Blood draw o Drug Administration (Bar Code Medication and Administration (BCMA) o Bladder irrigation o Among other areas of nursing care Minimum Qualifications Requirements: BLS certification accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) Unrestricted license to practice nursing in one of the States, Territories, or Commonwealths of the United States or the District of Columbia Experience: All contract personnel will have a minimum of two-year direct patient care experience within the last three years in the field. o All Med/Surg Registered Nurses shall have at least two (2) years of experience in an acute care, medical/surgical setting exclusive of agency assignments and must have worked within the last six (6) months in the above settings. Education: ASN accepted; BSN preferred o Education must have been completed at a school accredited by the ACEN or CCNE. Requirements

  • BLS certification accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Unrestricted license to practice nursing in one of the States, Territories, or Commonwealths of the United States or the District of Columbia
