About The Position

West Michigan Cancer Center is looking for a Medical Social Worker to cover for 12-16 weeks starting in June 2026. This would be 24 hours per week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8 am - 4:30 pm. Following the 16 weeks, this position would transition to PRN to help cover vacations and time away for the Medical Social Worker. Location: In person only FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt Position Summary: The Medical Social Worker at WMCC is responsible for providing support services in the realm of psychosocial services/social work to patients and their caregivers. Work with a multitude of other disciplines as well as independently to ensure quality patient care. Key member of the interdisciplinary team for advocacy and quality of life issues for oncology. Provide patients with brief therapy and community referrals as appropriate. Coordinates with teammates to ensure comprehensive services and assessments are completed regarding mental health, substance use, basic needs, and community support as warranted. Regular and predictable attendance.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work or healthcare field such as counseling, psychology or mental health from an accredited institution required (or equivalent such as LLP), emphasis in Interpersonal Practice preferred.
  • Current State of Michigan LMSW license required.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in medical social work in healthcare setting required, oncology or hospice/palliative care experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work independently is required.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology and overall understanding of health care systems, psychosocial impact of life threatening disease preferred, willingness to become expert is required.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of community resources.
  • Ability to cope with high intensity emotional strain of working with severe illness of patients, conducting self in professional manner; maintain professional boundaries as outlined in the NASW Code of Ethics.
  • Must have or be able to obtain BLS certification.
  • Excellent interpersonal skill to interact effectively with management, employees, peers and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use critical thinking to interpret, comprehend and complete complicated and detailed projects in a timely manner.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and work independently.
  • High degree of integrity to keep confidential all information related to WMCC patients, employees, physicians, and institution related information.
  • Ability to accept and apply feedback.
  • Ability to lift general office supplies or equipment occasionally.
  • Ability to complete a one and two person lift to assist patients.
  • Requires sitting/standing for long period.
  • Manual dexterity required to use computer keyboard or other office equipment.
  • Excellent visual and auditory acuity necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • oncology or hospice/palliative care experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Epic EMR and familiarity with NCCN Screening preferred.
