A Day in the Life The Cardiac Surgery Operating Unit is a highly specialized, multidisciplinary environment dedicated to the surgical treatment of complex heart and great vessel conditions. The unit brings together cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, nurses, and technologists who work in close coordination to deliver procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair and replacement, and advanced structural heart interventions. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and supported by rigorous safety and quality protocols, the unit operates with a strong focus on precision, efficiency, and optimal patient outcomes. This position is remote to enhance our competitive edge and expand our cross-functional collaboration efforts. This role will require 25% of travel to enhance collaboration and ensure successful completion of projects. In this role as a Medical Science Liaison Advisor - Cardiac Surgery for the Heart Valve Therapy focus area of the Cardiac Surgery Clinical Research & Medical Science organization, you will be responsible for providing disease state, therapy, and evidence expertise, and leading strategic medical science and data projects. The scope of work may include literature review, development and maintenance of key evidence landscape and summaries, supporting cross functional teams in accurate scientific content development. In this role you may assess how research and data proposals fit within the context of current research and evidence strategies. Ability to travel up to 25% domestic and internationally

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of 15 years of clinical/clinical research experience/medical affairs
  • Or minimum of 13 years of clinical/clinical research experience/medical affairs with an advanced degree
  • Experience in cardiac therapies

Nice To Haves

  • PhD, MD, Doctoral degree with preference towards healthcare, medical, or scientific profession (e.g., nursing, medicine, epidemiology, pharmacology, biological science or other related medical/scientific field).
  • Clinical Research experience at Medtronic or within a medical device industry.
  • 10 years of experience in healthcare, medical or related scientific research profession.
  • Advanced ability to understand and apply practical medical/scientific and product knowledge in a competent and consistent manner for Medical Affairs activities
  • Advanced ability to research, interpret, and synthesize published medical/scientific literature and other scientific/technical data sources to meet information needs of intended audience
  • Advanced knowledge of clinical trial design and evidence hierarchy
  • Advanced ability to make competent, risk-based, and timely scientific decisions based on an insightful analysis of critical information; ability to balance analysis with decisiveness
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, and effectively influence diverse stakeholders (team members, functional partners, senior leadership, and HCPs)
  • Solid critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • High attention to detail and accuracy; ability to work independently; accountable for outcomes
  • Proven ability to develop trusted relationships and collaborate with co-workers and functional partners in a matrixed organization
  • Proficient computer skills with experience in Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a deep understanding of the science behind our products.
  • Develops research intelligence in our product and evidence space.
  • Develops, implements, and supports Aortic evidence strategy via literature review, gap analysis and data review for ongoing and planned projects.
  • Review external proposals (research, collaboration, and data proposals) and drive alignment as needed.
  • Drives education and outreach for safe and effective use of our products.
  • Utilizes advanced subject matter expertise to provide medical / scientific input to various functions and organizational units to facilitate insightful decision-making regarding research and data strategies.
  • Tracks all assigned research projects, monitors progress, and creates a forecast for evidence.
  • Ensures effective objective value propositions are developed and articulated for Medtronic technologies to stakeholders (patients, health care providers, payers, government agencies, health technology assessment organizations, public) through appropriate channels.
  • Presents proposals for internal alignment by putting them in the context of on-going research, literature, and competitive research.
  • Monitors and synthesizes key conference medical information, journal publications, and PR related to structural heart therapies.
  • As a therapy and scientific expert, may support cross-functional teams and business.
  • Create literature reviews or evidence summaries as needed to drive clinical research decisions.
  • Provide clinical perspective to assist with development of marketing strategy and plans.
  • Liaison between commercial and scientific teams, including physicians.
  • Engage and provide feedback to physicians on potential research ideas / questions.
