About The Position

CVP is seeking Medical Records Technicians to provide comprehensive outpatient medical coding services for our Nation's Veterans at the Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System. You'll play a vital role in ensuring accurate coding of outpatient medical records to support quality healthcare delivery and proper reimbursement for Veterans' care. As a Medical Records Technician specializing in outpatient coding services, you will review and code outpatient medical records for a complex tertiary-level teaching medical facility. You'll work with healthcare documentation to ensure compliance with ICD-10-CM, CPT, E&M, and HCPCS guidelines while supporting comprehensive ambulatory care services.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree in Health Information Technology preferred
  • Current certification required: RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, or CPC from AHIMA or AAPC
  • Minimum of three (3) years continuous coding experience in a facility with patient population equal to or exceeding VA's current volume
  • Experience in tertiary-level teaching medical facility with medical school affiliation preferred
  • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, CPT, E&M coding, and HCPCS coding systems
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Experience with electronic health records and coding software
  • Understanding of CMS guidelines and compliance requirements
  • US Citizenship required for background investigation
  • Proficient in spoken and written English
  • VA software systems including VIRR and E&M calculator usage
  • International Classification of Diseases-Version 10 (ICD-10) for diagnosis coding
  • Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS)
  • Evaluation and Management coding guidelines
  • Understanding of ambulatory care and outpatient procedures

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree in Health Information Technology preferred
  • Experience in tertiary-level teaching medical facility with medical school affiliation preferred

Responsibilities

  • Review and code outpatient medical records using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems with >95% accuracy
  • Apply Evaluation and Management (E&M) coding and code procedures for primary care, medical subspecialties, surgical subspecialties, ambulatory surgery, observation, and endoscopy
  • Query providers via email or VIRR for documentation clarification and ensure 100% data validation of all insured outpatient encounters
  • Process record coding within seven (7) calendar days with >95% compliance and maintain coding accuracy standards
  • Review patient records to ensure appropriate documentation and coding, collaborate with healthcare teams for clarification
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, monthly audits, and provide performance reports while staying current with regulatory changes
