About The Position

Under the supervision of the Director of Medical Records, the Medical Records Technician is responsible for maintaining the security, confidentiality, completeness, and accuracy of Red Rock Behavioral Health Services’ medical records as required by the agency, state, and federal regulations, such as 42CFR Part 2 and HIPAA.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • One-year clerical experience working with details
  • Detail oriented, flexible, self-starter, must be willing to follow strict guidelines
  • Computer literate
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Organizational skills for multi-tasking
  • Ability to deal with highly sensitive and confidential information

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years in Clinical Records Department preferred
  • Previous mental health experience preferred
  • Commitment to the mission of Red Rock BHS

Responsibilities

  • Uses electronic processing systems to carry out job responsibilities
  • Retrieves, processes, and prioritizes all requests for medical records made through the agency, patients, and outside agencies to ensure that only the appropriate documents are released and sent
  • Documents and tracks all requests, releases, and authorizations within the electronic medical records
  • Process requests for Social Security Disability, adoption, foster care, as well as DHS/OCS investigations, and ensure that only the appropriate documents are released and sent
  • Retrieves, reviews, and distributes department mail and faxes
  • Process records request to obtain health records from outside agencies
  • Calls other agencies/hospitals to follow-up on the records request
  • Assist patients and staff with medical record requests and questions
  • Assists in the destruction of client records in accordance with the agency’s destruction policy
  • Prioritizes daily tasks to achieve the high quality standards set by the agency
  • Assists with scanning consumer correspondence received by the department
  • Backs up other records duties including, but not limited to, printing records for audits, scanning, copying, and answering phones
  • Cross-trains to learn other duties in the department as assigned
  • Participates in staff meetings, seminars, and workshops to gain knowledge of the agency's policies, rules, and procedures
  • Participates in both ongoing in-service training and pertinent external training
  • Contributes to the implementation of new processes and objectives
  • Performs other duties as required
