About The Position

This position serves as the Release of Information Specialist for the Bureau of Health Care Services/Michigan Department of Corrections. Monitors the Release of Information process for quality and ethical practices. Responsible for completing Release of Information requests received for Paroled, Discharged and Expired Prisoners. Assists in Special Projects and provides coverage for MDOC facilities as requested. Research current legal standards in correctional and community settings providing guidance as necessary. Participates in the development of Health Information Services policies and procedures on Confidentiality, Information Security, Information Storage, Retrieval and Record Retention. Monitors and provides updates for review of Release of Information policies as needed. Serves as a member of the Health Information Advisory Committee.

Requirements

  • Possession of an associate's degree in health information or medical record technology.
  • Medical Record Examiner 8: No specific type or amount is required.
  • Medical Record Examiner 9: One year of experience equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner 8.
  • Medical Record Examiner E10: Two years of experience equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner, including one year equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner 9.
  • The Department of Corrections will not hire individuals who have been convicted of a felony or who have felony charges pending, in accordance with Public Act 140 of 1996.
  • All required documents must be attached and submitted at the time of application for further consideration.
  • Applications must be submitted through NEOGOV to be considered.
  • Interested applicants who are attaching transcripts must attach a copy of your official college transcripts indicating the specific type of degree earned and the conferred/graduation date.
  • Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.
  • All employees are required to report any possible conflict of interest
  • New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification by the American Health Information Management Association as a Registered Health Information Technician or Registered Health Information Administrator.
