About The Position

Under the consultative supervision of the Associate Chief of Proton Physics, the position assists the Medical Physics team with routine quality assurance tasks. This includes performing patient-specific plan verification measurements and/or calculations, assisting in daily, monthly, and annual quality assurance tests, and helping with the development of customized software tools. The role also involves assisting with the administration of the radiation safety program and performing routine medical physics tasks under supervision.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in health physics or closely related fields is required (Master's degree preferred).
  • Three years' experience as a Health Physicist in a hospital environment, or equivalent applicable work experience, is preferred.
  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics is preferred.
  • General knowledge of radiation physics and best practices in Radiation Safety management.
  • Knowledge of health physics equipment, such as survey meters and various dosimeters.
  • Understanding of the working principles of dose measurement instruments and detectors such as diodes, ionization chambers, TLDs, and film dosimetry.
  • Technical and organizational ability to assist the Radiation Safety Officer in overseeing and coordinating the radiation safety program.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Administers all aspects of the radiation safety program under supervision.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements related to radioactive materials license and machine registrations issued by the State of Maryland.
  • Performs radiation safety measurements and administrative duties related to the radiation safety program.
  • Advises staff on radiation safety issues and conducts radiation safety training for all staff.
  • Interacts with personnel of regulatory agencies during site visits and inspections.
  • Evaluates and implements regulatory changes as mandated by federal, state, and local jurisdictions.
  • Assists with maintaining and amending radioactive materials license and radiation machine registrations.
  • Assists with the receipt and proper disposal of radioactive material when needed.
  • Maintains all radiation safety records for review by federal, state, and local regulators and prepares comprehensive reports that meet required standards of radiation safety.
  • Participates actively in Radiation Safety committee meetings.
  • Assists with daily, monthly, and annual quality assurance measurements related to the proton treatment delivery system.
  • Assists with patient-specific quality assurance procedures to ensure safe delivery of radiation therapy.
  • Provides general assistance with Medical Physicist tasks.
