Requirements

  • Medical Physicist A: Masters of Science and 0 to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. American Board of Radiology (ABR) eligible; no experience is required; residency training in CAMPEP-approved therapeutic medical physics is required.
  • Medical Physicist B: Masters of Science and 2-3 years experience working as a full-time medical physicist. Residency training can count as clinical experience; American Board of Radiology (ABR) certified.
  • Medical Physicist C: Masters of Science and 5-7 years post American Board of Radiology (ABR) certification experience as a full-time medical physicist. Demonstration of a leadership role in medical physics organization, equipment commissioning, or clinical development projects. The leadership requirement may be waived for a physicist based at a Penn network location.
  • Must possess knowledge of and experience with Varian's ARIA, Eclipse, TrueBeam, and conventional clinical physics procedures, including but not limited to, operation and calibration of treatment devices, operation and calibration of dosimetry equipment, operation and calibration of treatment planning systems, quality assurance procedures, 'specialized procedures' (SRS, SBRT), and familiarity safety procedures and regulations as per the PA Department of Environmental Protection.
  • Prior proton therapy experience is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in the clinical aspects of radiation therapy treatment planning and machine support including weekly chart checks, initial chart checks, planning support, 4DCT etc.
  • Participate in routine physics QA program such as Conventional and CT-simulator QA, Brachytherapy QA procedures; perform linear accelerator calibration and monthly / Annual mechanical and dosimetry QA; participate in the quality assurance for proton/photon units, ancillary equipment and procedures used in Radiation Therapy, Commissioning of new equipment, i.e., linear accelerators, proton or photon techniques and simulators; assist in developing quality assurance policies, institute procedures, and entering institution's Condition Reporting System (CRS) for safety and quality issues; participate in other QA activities, such as morning huddle etc.
  • Assume lead duties for procedures or clinical activities: photon or proton machine support and process improvement projects, writing policies and procedures for new therapy techniques and QA processes.
  • Participate in special treatment procedures such as, Stereotactic procedures (SRS, SRT and SBRT), HDR/LDR treatment planning, pre-treatment QA and treatment delivery supervision, Prostate seed/strand implants, IMRT treatment techniques implementation and IMRT QA, Proton Therapy QA, PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT), Total Skin Electron and Total Body Irradiation (TBI) etc.
  • Provide proton, photon, brachytherapy medical physics cross coverage (including network locations) as requested by the Director of Clinical Operations, and/or Chiefs of Physics Division.
  • Participate in training of Radiation Oncology, Medical Physics Residents, and visitors who enrolled in specialized technology training courses, such as proton therapy training, Halcyon linac training, Cyberknife, GammaKnife training, and radiation therapist training etc.
  • Participate in implementing new treatment therapies, procedures and techniques at Penn facilities, including but not limited to Penn Medicine | Virtua Health, etc.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
