This position performs phlebotomy, specimen collection and urine drug screen collections for patients of all ages. Performs all paperwork, technical and non-technical procedures required to process, submit, and initiate the testing process. Communicates with Physicians/Nursing Staff/Managers/co-workers, as appropriate about patients, specimen collection, computer issues and other laboratory issues. This includes pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population. Properly identifies and labels all specimens per established laboratory procedures. Performs routine point of care/waived testing and analysis according to established procedures and based on clinic/office need. Performs quality control checks on each procedure and/or reagents as required and appropriate. Performs urine drug screen collection with all paperwork complete. Performs routine departmental maintenance which may include temperature checks, counter cleaning, supply inventory and others with appropriate documentation. Utilizes Laboratory Information System (LIS) and network appropriately and efficiently. Assists Medical technologists with patient testing as needed and within scope. Communicates with Physicians, Nursing, and other office personnel, as appropriate and required to support quality patient care. Escalates concerns using appropriate reporting channels. I understand that it is not within my scope of practice to handle any medications that I might inadvertently come in contact with, including medications delivered in the pneumatic tube system. If I do come in contact with medications I know to alert a licensed employee for them to handle.
