About The Position

The Medical Office Assistant at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is responsible for supporting physicians and healthcare providers in various clerical, financial, and medical office operations within an ambulatory practice. This role involves performing administrative duties, assisting with patient care, and ensuring smooth clinic operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Completion of a formal medical office assistant training program or equivalent, such as Certified Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, or Licensed Practical Nurse with no clinic experience.
  • Two years of experience in a healthcare setting if not completing a formal training program.

  • Ability to multi-task and type at least 35 wpm.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Word.

Responsibilities

  • Perform administrative duties such as answering telephones, greeting patients, and updating patient medical records.
  • Verify patient demographic and insurance information, schedule appointments, and perform billing and bookkeeping tasks.
  • Check-in patients, assist with patient histories, and prepare charts for examinations.
  • Chaperone or assist providers during patient care activities as needed.
  • Educate and advise patients on specified medical issues within established guidelines.
  • Assist with scheduling, coding, and billing of medical procedures and ambulatory surgical procedures.
  • Arrange examining room equipment, clean rooms, and escort patients to and from assigned rooms.
  • Dispose of contaminated supplies and maintain stocks of medical supplies and medications appropriate to the clinic.
  • Practice safety, environmental, and infection control methods, adhering to HIPAA and OSHA regulations.
