About The Position

Community Legal Aid (CLA) is seeking an attorney to join its Worcester-based medical-legal partnership (MLP) with UMass Memorial Health. This role involves holding regular client intake hours at clinical sites, participating in leadership team and project evaluation meetings with clinical partners, and serving as a liaison between legal and clinical project partners. The attorney may also assist in training, recruiting, and mentoring private volunteer attorneys for pro bono referrals. The position requires handling a diverse caseload, including homelessness prevention, income and health insurance maximization, domestic relations, special education, and guardianship. Additionally, the attorney will be responsible for grant-reporting and administrative duties. CLA is a non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly residents of central and western Massachusetts, with over 180 staff across multiple offices, focusing on client-centered advocacy and community partnerships.

Requirements

  • Current third-year law students, recent law school graduates and more experienced attorneys are eligible to apply
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Willingness to meet with clients at medical facilities
  • Highly organized
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including versatility in communicating effectively with a range of stakeholders

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in developing, administering and/or working as an attorney in a medical-legal partnership or other collaborative setting
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well with corporate and institutional partners
  • Fluency in a second language, especially Spanish

Responsibilities

  • Hold regular client intake hours at clinical sites
